Shaping Digital Wisdom Middle School Curriculum (Grades 5-8): 9 Social and Emotional Lesson Plans With a Focus on Technology and Social Media

Description

The Social and Emotional Lesson Plan (SEL) Curriculum was designed to be used with middle school students in grades 5-8. It was developed for teachers and counselors as a follow-up to a Shape the Sky training or as a stand-alone resource to meet the school district’s internet and safety policies. The plans are for teachers and counselors to use with their students to teach responsible and safe smartphone use.

Details

Each lesson guide follows the same format: overview, key ideas, instructional activities, a social-emotional learning component, and assessment questions. The materials are ready-to-use and designed to last between 25-45 minutes, depending on the depth of discussion the instructor permits. Lessons may include an excerpt or a video to guide the discussion.

The curriculum can be instructed over a few weeks or months, or instructors can present materials as a particular need arises in relation to a specific topic.

Background

The SEL Curriculum developer, Ryan Klingensmith, has a background in the mental health field. He has dedicated decades to working with teens with mental health disorders and later worked in schools through Student Assistance Programs (SAP) where he realized that many at-risk students were being negatively impacted by social media. He and Jennifer Kosanovic, a 20-year veteran educator who spent time as a teacher, curriculum director, principal, and consultant, developed these lesson plans in response to that observed negative impact.

The lesson plans were developed as a result of surveying high school students, high school teachers and administrators, and parents of high school students. The curriculum is based on the results of the survey and what they believed students should be taught about social media during high school to prepare them for life after graduation.
