“The Lifeline and 988”
The previous National Suicide Prevention Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) is being simplified to 988. This will make it much easier for individuals struggling to remember as it’s very similar to 911. Individuals can call, text and even “chat” 988 from the website. For providers who are always trying to connect individuals to resources, this is a great update and easy to remember. The previous number will stay in effect. The previous National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will now be known as 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
About the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. “The Lifeline’s network of over 200 crisis centers has been in operation since 2005, and has been proven to be effective. It’s the counselors at these local crisis centers who answer the contacts the Lifeline receives every day. Numerous studies have shown that callers feel less suicidal, less depressed, less overwhelmed and more hopeful after speaking with a Lifeline counselor.”
