“Meta Takes Down 63,000 Instagram ‘Sextortion’ Accounts In Nigeria”

Over the past two years, I’ve been highlighting the troubling trend of teen boys being targeted for sextortion schemes originating in Nigeria during my trainings. I’ve also written several blog posts on this issue. It’s essential that we take action to protect our kids, rather than relying on tech companies, whose business plans may not always align with the best interests of our children.

While it’s encouraging to see that Meta has taken action by removing tens of thousands of accounts involved in sextortion, this is likely just the beginning. There are still numerous concerning behaviors, posts, accounts, and content across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and other apps that imitate these popular social media sites.

As parents, educators, and professionals working directly with youth, it is our responsibility to be on the front lines in protecting the safety, privacy, and innocence of our children. It’s crucial to educate ourselves about sextortion, recognize the warning signs and behaviors, and be aware of available resources to support those affected. We cannot rely solely on tech companies to safeguard our youth. By working together, we can make a meaningful impact.
